FSL 11+ Course - Week 7
Week7 – What We Cover
This week, we work on the following:
Maths: Fractions (FSL Red Book, pages 21-24)
A few tips on these are as follows:
1) To find a fraction of a number, divide by the bottom (the denominator) and multiply your answer by the top. So for example, 5/8 of 24 = 24 divided by 8 = 3, 3 x 5 = 15.
2) To simplify a fraction to its lowest terms, divide both numerator and denominator by a factor that can go into both of these numbers equally. For example, the fraction 15/20. Both 15 and 20 can be divided by 5, so after doing so, the answer is 3/4. A good tip to remind children how to do this is to ask them ‘what times table are both 15 and 20 in’, so these are easier to spot.
Equivalent fractions are explained fully in the Red FSL Book (pages 23-24).
Non Verbal Reasoning: Introducing Reflection (FSL Red book, page 25)
This is the last key part of NVR and goes hand in hand with Rotation. Many students get confused between the two, but for now, students just need be able to recognise a vertical, horizontal and diagonal reflection of a shape.
Verbal Reasoning: Sentence Analogies (FSL Green Book, pages 20-21)
These questions ask the children to complete a sentence in the best way, e.g. ‘hexagon is to (five, six, seven) as quadrilateral is to (three, nine, four)’.
In this example, the answers are related to the number of sides each shape has, so the student should underline six in the first set of brackets, and four in the second to give the correct answer.
However, the relationship could be to do with anything – similar words (e.g. happy is to merry, as sad is to miserable), opposite words, general knowledge (e.g. foal is to horse, as kid is to goat) and even letter order (trip is to tip, as trap is to tap).
They need to look at every option carefully, and be sure to read the whole sentence through before they go to answer (as it’s all too easy to select an answer for the first part of the question quickly, then try to make the second half fit accordingly).
