FSL 11+ Course - Week 5

Week 5 – What We Cover

This week, we cover the following:

Maths: Multiplying and Ordering Decimals (FSL Red book, pages 14-15)

For Multiplying and Dividing Decimal Numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. For these, a student just needs to be clear in which direction they are moving the numbers and by how many spaces. It sounds simple, but if they are multiplying, then they must check their answer is BIGGER at the end, and of course the opposite when they are dividing.

When Ordering Decimals, it helps to list the numbers given on top of each other, with the decimal aligned, so it is easy to compare them from biggest to smallest based on their column values.

Non Verbal Reasoning: Introducing Layering (FSL Red book, pages 16-17)

For these questions, they should look out for exactly which ‘layer’ a shape sits (is it top, middle or bottom, does it move?). Also, what shapes are created when the two bigger shapes overlap one another, and how many sides do the shapes created by the overlap have?

Verbal Reasoning: Compound words (FSL Green book, pages 14-15)

Compound Words is quite a nice Verbal Reasoning Type – e.g. flower + pot = flowerpot. For these, they just need to look out on how to pronounce to separate words as one complete one with the harder questions – e.g. pea + led = pealed, which sounds very different than the individual words (similar to pot + ion = potion, and fat + her = father).
