FSL 11+ Course - Week 2

Week 2 – What We Cover

This week, we cover the following:

Maths: Large Sums and Word Problems (FSL Red book, pages 7-8)

Larger addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums, plus applying these in word problems. Students should look out for key words in the latter that give an indication of which operator to use – e.g. to find the ‘total’, the children need to add numbers together. To find the ‘difference’ between two numbers, they must subtract. ‘Share (or split) equally’ translates as divide and ‘lots of’ refers to multiplication.

It’s also important that students underline the key numbers in a word problem as it helps them to separate the information clearly to then work out what they need to!

Non Verbal Reasoning: Counting (FSL red book, pages 9-10)

Counting the points of a star, total number of sides of a number of shapes, and finding similarities in shapes.

English: ‘Cloze’ Text (FSL blue book, pages 5-6)

This involves choosing an appropriate word within a sentence to ensure the sentence makes sense in the context of a long passage. For example:

The family rushed into the airport and were relieved to see that their plane was slightly postpone/delayed/schedule/earliest by an hour.’

Students just need to be cautious that they keep in the right tense (present, past etc.) as necessary and also that they read through the entire passage once completed, to check that it ‘flows’ well.

Verbal Reasoning: (FSL green book, pages 2-3)

‘Letter Analogies’ type – click to see a video explaining this in more detail.
