FSL 11+ Course - Week 16

Week 16 – What We Cover

This week, we work on the following:

Maths: Probability and Averages (FSL red book, pages 48-50)

We start with explaining how to work out the Mean, Median, Mode and Range. Please see the following notes to help them with their homework if necessary:

1) The mean = the average – I tell the children to remember that it’s ‘mean’ because it involves two tricky processes – adding up all the numbers given, then dividing by how many numbers there are. Also with the mean, they need to look out for questions that ask for the missing number that has created an average –

e.g. Sam took 5 tests, he has the result of four of the tests, (8, 10, 7, 6) but is missing one. He knows his average mark is 8. What must be his missing score?

For these they have to know that:

? divided by 5 (the number of tests) = 8.

So the the total all the scores must make is 40.

8 + 10 + 7 + 6 = 31

40 – 31 = 9, so the missing score must be 9.

2) The mode = the MOST common number, again I tell students to remember that MOde and MOst sound similar to remind them what they’re looking for

3) The median = the middle number when all the numbers given have been placed in order – students must remember to put ALL the numbers down they have been given, even if some come up twice – e.g. 5, 4, 7, 8, 7 should look like 4, 5, 7, 7, 8 – so the median is 7.

If the number of numbers given is equal, they are looking for the middle point of the two middle numbers – e.g. 9, 10, 10, 12, 13, 15 – in this case the middle point is between 10 and 12, so must be 11.

4) The range = the largest number given – the lowest number. E.g. 200, 300, 900, 400, 100 – the largest = 900, the smallest = 100, so the range = 900 – 100 which is 800.

We then moved onto Probability, which is pretty self-explanatory but they should ensure they’re answering the questions given in the right format – i.e. in a fraction, or in words (certain, unlikely etc.) or on a scale of 0 to 1.
