Fully taught course - Week 15

Week 15 – What We Cover

This week, we work on the following:

Maths: 3D Shapes, Volume and Measurements  (FSL Red Book, pages 42-47)

In the lesson this week, we cover Volume of a Cuboid (volume = length x width x height), and Identifying Edges, Faces and Vertices (corners) of 3D shapes.

We then move onto Measurements of weight/capacity and distance. Here are some useful tips on them:

1) Without fail, they need to know the following off by heart:

1kg = 1000g, 1l = 1000ml, 1m = 100cm and 1cm = 10mm.

2) With word problems in Maths, they will always expect children to be able to convert between two quite quickly – e.g. ‘I have 1.2l of orange juice and 250ml of lemonade, how much do I have if I mix them together in ml?’ etc, so they must always been on the lookout for this and be able to refer to the above facts accordingly.

3) They also must wary of trick questions, e.g. when they’re given a few measurements to add together for example in cm, but they ask for the answer in m instead (so they have to convert the answer at the end).

We also discuss metric vs imperial measurements, and again it would be great if they can also learn the following table:

MeasureMetricImperial
Mass (Weight)g, kgoz, lbs, st
Distancemm, cm, m , kminches, ft, yards, miles
Capacity (Liquids)ml, cl, lfl oz, pints, gallons

They would be given the conversion amounts (e.g. 1kg = 2.2lbs) in a word problem if needed, so for now they just need to be able to decipher between the two main categories i.e. what would be an appropriate metric/imperial measurement for the weight of man ( kilograms for metric, and stone for imperial).
