FSL 11+ Course - Week 12

Week 12 – What We Cover

This week, we work on the following:

Maths: Data Handling (FSL Red book, pages 33-35)

In Data Handling we go over Data Tables, Pictograms, Pie and Bar Charts, and as Line Graphs). For pie charts, it’s important that they can identify fractions of a circle (i.e. be able top spot what a 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8 and 1/12 would look like). Also, they need to be clear how many degrees what angle size each of these fractions should have. E.g. 1/2 = 180⁰, 1/4 = 90⁰ etc.

For Bar charts, I would also recommend quickly writing the score each bar is worth in the centre of the bar each time – that way, when students come to answer questions, they have all the numbers in front of them (rather than re-checking the height level of each bar again for each question instead).

English: Comprehension - Inferred Meaning (FSL Blue book, pages 15-17)

In the session this week, we worked on ‘Inferred Meaning’ in Comprehension (i.e. understanding texts at a deeper level and reading ‘between the lines’) as well as how a text creates Mood and Atmosphere. This can be challenging for the most able of students, but it’s important they keep asking themselves ‘how would the main character(s) be feeling at this point?’ throughout the passage, to gain an idea of how the author is intending to affect the reader.
