FSL 11+ Course - Week 11

Week 11 – What We Cover

This week, we work on the following:

Maths: Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percentages + Time and Understanding Timetables (FSL Red book, pages 30-32)

Most children find converting decimals/percentages not too tricky because the numbers ‘look’ similar (e.g. 0.25 = 25%). However, they find fractions harder because fractions have usually been simplified down from hundredths. It’s important that a student can convert fractions into equivalent hundredths, before they try and convert it to a decimal or percentage. E.g. 1/4 = 25/100. Only once they have the fraction out of 100 can they then convert it further. (So, 25/100 = 0.25 = 25% for example).

We also cover the 24 hour clock, dealing with and understanding a fast/slow clock, and word problems including timetables this week. Students should remember to always make sure their answer matches the time format of the question (so if the question is in the 24hr clock, they must give their answer in the 24hr clock too).

Verbal Reasoning: Code Matching (FSL Green book, pages 31-32)

Click here to watch a video of this type. There are two useful tips to bear in mind:

  1. Discourage the students from drawing lines to link the words to the codes – this gets confusing when answering the questions – instead they should write the corresponding numbers above the letters in each code.

  2. Normally it is good practice to check the answersheet as they go, to see if they can save time working out what an answer must be. However, with code matching, the answers can look very similar, so it is better to work them out in full BEFORE they go to the answersheet to mark them in.
