FSL 11+ Course - Week 1
Week 1 – What We Cover
There is no weekly test in Week 1, but the children receive all the books they’ll need for the weekly lessons, as well as a bag to carry them in. We then run through the materials given and discuss the exam in a bit more detail. We also have a bit of a chat about the weekly tests they will have and what we will be expecting from them in terms of homework.
We then cover:
Maths: Mental Maths (FSL Red book, pages 3-4)
Basic mental maths, number bonds, doubling and halving large numbers
Non Verbal Reasoning: Introducing NVR Shapes (FSL Red book, pages 5-6)
Recognising regular polygons and their number of sides
English: Parts of Speech (FSL Blue book, pages 2-4)
A noun is a naming word – i.e. a person, a place, or a thing. There are four main types of noun, as follows:
Proper – nouns that need capital letters as they refer to something or someone specific, e.g. England, David, X-Box etc.
Common – everyday items that don’t need a capital letter, e.g. book, floor, window etc.
Collective – nouns given to a group of something, e.g. a flock (a group of sheep), bunch (of flowers) or team (of players) etc.
Abstract – names given to things we cannot physically touch or see – e.g. happiness, guilt, anger etc.
A verb is an action/doing word – e.g. read, walking, slept etc. Note that ‘to be’ and ’to have’ are still verbs, even though there is not a lot of action involved! For example, Anneka has a sister – has is still the verb here.
An adjective is a describing word – e.g. funny, sad, tired etc.
An adverb is a word that describes a verb, often ending in -ly – e.g. carefully, hopefully, quietly etc.
Verbal Reasoning: (FSL Green book, pages 2-3)
‘Letter Sequences’ (see explainer video here).
