FSL 11+ Course - Week 4
Week 4 – What We Cover
This week, we cover the following:
Non Verbal Reasoning: Introducing Shading and Line Types (FSL Red book, page 13)
This area is quite simple but a very important part of NVR overall. Students need to be careful to watch out for elements of a figure changing their colour/shading to another in any type of NVR question, though it is most common in ‘missing’ box series questions or matrices (both of which we’ll cover in more depth later in the course).
Verbal Reasoning: Balancing Equations (FSL Green book, pages 12-13)
‘Balancing Equations’ is a maths-based Verbal Reasoning type. Students have to work out the missing number to make the same result on both sides of the sum – e.g. 3 x 4 + 1 = 10 + 5 – 2 (as both sides must equal 13). This isn’t tricky in method, but it does rely on quick and accurate mental maths skills – knowledge of their times tables (both multiplication and division facts) is key.
English: Punctuation and Spelling (FSL Blue book, pages 7-10)
There are some useful punctuation facts in their blue English class book (on page 7) if they need a bit of revision before they do their homework. For most children, spelling is either something they find easy or not, but even if it doesn’t come naturally, it does help to learn some of the most common misspellings (that they’ll find in their classwork/homework this week) by heart if at all possible (examples include beautiful, business, definitely etc.).
Also, this video is helpful in explaining Apostrophes (including the tricky-to-explain it’s vs. its!).
